CAITHNESS PRESBYTERY

The Church of Scotland  is a Presbyterian church, so presbytery is the fundamental court of the Kirk. There are 49 presbyteries and ours covers Caithness, Strathy and Halladale.

Presbytery meets for ordinary business 7 times a year, alternatively in Thurso West and Wick St Fergus on the first Tuesday of  September (Thurso), November December, February March and May .The June meeting is held in the church of the moderator for that year. Meetings are open to the public.
Membership.

Our presbytery is constituted by all Church of Scotland  ministers in the area in good status; at present 4 parish ministers, 1 community minister and 3 retired ministers; one serving deacon and one retired deacon plus an elder "representing" each congregation.(13) plus 7 additional elders chosen by presbytery itself usually because of special experience or skills or to ensure that larger congregations are more adequately represented.  We have corresponding members from the Guild, Readers etc who may speak in any debate but have no vote.

The presbytery offers supervision and advice as well as seeking to encourage co-operation between congregations and plans county wide events. Presbytery has a duty to produce a Plan showing where we want churches to be and how they are to be staffed etc. Supervision takes the form of ensuring that records are properly kept, financial affairs comply with Kirk and OSCR (Office of Scottish Charities Regulator) rules. In the event of a complaint being made against a minister it is the presbytery that would investigate and take action as appropriate. Presbytery is itself subject to the supervision of a committee of the General Assembly.

Presbytery is like a Kirk Session a court of the church: its chairman is moderator who is usually elected for one year only: it has a clerk and treasurer who hold office as long as  presbytery wishes.
Presbytery is there to help not obstruct, to assist but not to interfere in the day to day running of a congregation.
